What this check can and can’t tell you

The checker uses axe-core, an open-source rules engine, to test the page against WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 Level A and AA rules that software can evaluate, plus a set of best-practice rules. It also runs a short keyboard test of its own. Each finding it reports is a pattern that commonly blocks people: a form field without a label, an icon button with no name, text that’s too faint to read.

Plenty of barriers can’t be detected this way. A tool can confirm an image has alt text, but not whether the text makes sense. It can’t tell if a menu traps keyboard users or if an error message is ever announced. That’s why we call these potential issues, and why a full audit includes a person testing the page.

How the score works

Each distinct problem the checker detects adds penalty points by severity:

Points subtracted per detected problem
SeverityPenalty points
Critical15
Serious10
Moderate5
Minor2

A problem that repeats across many elements counts more, up to double. Best-practice problems, which aren’t WCAG failures on their own, count half. Each item that needs a person to review takes off one point, up to eight.

The score is 100 × e−points / 110, rounded. The first problems count the most, and the score never quite reaches zero, so it separates a page with a couple of issue types from one with a dozen.

Besides the rules engine, the checker presses Tab through the first stops on the page to see whether keyboard focus is visible. Hidden focus is one of the most common barriers we see, and many automated scanners skip it.

The score summarizes what software found on one page. It isn’t a percentage of accessibility, an ADA rating or a WCAG conformance result.

What happens to the page you check

The browser we use opens the page the way a visitor would. It doesn’t log in, click buttons or submit forms. If someone checked the same page in the last 24 hours, we show you that saved result right away, and it doesn’t use up your free check; you can still ask for a fresh one. We keep a short summary of your findings for 72 hours so our assistant and our team can refer to it if you get in touch. Details are on the privacy page.

Please only check sites you own or have permission to test.
